Black Lives Matter

Demonstration at Königsplatz: More than 25,000 people protest

Munich – In early summer 2020, there will be several rallies in Munich under the motto “Black Lives Matter”. The largest demonstration will take place on Saturday (6 June) at Königsplatz. Originally planned for 200 participants, more than 25,000 people eventually flocked to the “silent protest” against racism and in memory of George Floyd.

The police react even before the event begins: one hour before the planned start, the entrance is cordoned off due to the high number of participants. But the influx of people did not stop. At around 3 p.m., the officers finally clear the square again to allow more demonstrators to enter.

Although the organisers repeatedly point out the minimum distance of 1.5 metres, the implementation is not seamless with these crowds of people. At least most of the participants wear face masks.

The conclusion of this afternoon: a lot of commitment, many masks – and a remarkable sign of cohesion and protest in every respect.
